Education in the community

Our “Cricket in the Community” initiative launched in May 2006 has the backing of the Yorkshire Cricket Board (YCB) and is endorsed by England ladies’ cricketer, Katherine Brunt. Four England Cricket Board (ECB) qualified coaches, all employees of Drax, take cricket coaching to primary schools in the local area as part of our support for education and to promote sports learning as part of the National Curriculum.

In 2007 we launched the Drax Cup competition, the region’s first-ever cricket competition for teams under the age of nine. The competition is now in its fifth year, with some 340 schools entering in 2011. Alwoodley Primary School, Leeds won the 2011 finals day match, which was held at Headingley Carniege Staduim, Leeds, one of the most famous cricket grounds in the world.

The knock-out competition is organised by The Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board and Yorkshire School’s Cricket Association.
